Shahid Beheshti University (SBU) is one of the most prestigious universities in Iran. Established in 1959, SBU combines the tradition of a classical university with the dynamic character of a modern and interdisciplinary scientific enterprise.

In order to professionalize gemology in Iran, School of Earth Sciences of Shahid Beheshti University with more than 45 years’ history in mineralogy, has considered a long term program for gemology since 2011. The activity began with professional meetings which ended with a road map in the 17th Symposium of Geological Society of Iran in 2013 that was organized with the School of the Earth Sciences.

Gemological Development Institute of Iran (GDII) began its activity in the same year with the support of the School and Jewellery Union of Iran in October 2013. The institute began its work in the Technology Center of Shahid Beheshti University but moved to the faculty one year later. Now the institute is one of the active units of the University Science & Technology Park and based on an agreement GDII can use the Gemology Center facilities and technical labs. Professional workshops, research, gem identification, and grading are the main missions of GDII and it has close collaboration with Gemology Center.

3rd National Symposium of Gemology and Crystallography of Iran organized by Shahid Beheshti in 2015.  

Gemology Center of Shahid Beheshti University (SHU-GC) opened officially in October 2015 and gemological activities continued since then in line with the center long term development program. GC is situated in the School of Earth Sciences.
